Michael (“Mike”) Stiles has over twenty seven years experience counseling individuals and businesses on environmental issues, litigating environmental cases and general business disputes, and handling insurance coverage matters. Over the years, Mike’s clients have included public entities, aerospace companies, oil companies, property owners, real estate developers, manufacturers, retailers, small businesses, and small business owners.

Mike has handled a substantial number of matters involving federal environmental statutes, including the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (“Superfund” or “CERCLA”), the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (“RCRA”), the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act. California statutes with which Mike has experience include the Hazardous Substance Account Act, the Porter-Cologne Water Quality Control Act, the California Environmental Quality Act (“CEQA”), the Air Toxics Hot Spot Act, and the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act (commonly known as Proposition 65), among others. Mike has extensively negotiated with local, regional, state and federal regulatory agencies regarding enforcement of these federal and state statutes.

In addition to his environmental experience, Mike has handled a significant number of business disputes including breach of contract, unfair competition and insurance bad faith actions. Further, Mike has significant experience with construction defect litigation. Regardless of the type of matter involved, Mike seeks the most complete, timely and economical resolution, and has utilized many forms of alternative dispute resolution, including arbitration, mediation, and court supervised settlement conferences.
